Hello, Glyn, You will have to excuse me as Im a 62 yr old and not all that computer savy. I find it all a bit overwhelming.
However I just bought a D800 and was dismayed to see that my iMac of 2008 vintage would not open my raw files.
I understand I need to upgrade but to what??.
Would a 21.5″ with 2.7Ghz and 8Gb of ram do it or would I be better in the long run to go to the 27″ with 16GBram 3.4Ghz etc,
Also will I need to upgrade from CS3. Im quite happy here really and it frightens me to change.Regards & thanks Neil(NZ )

Rumours are that there is an imminent refresh of the imac coming. Did you consider waiting for the newer tech and if so why did you decide to go ahead and purchase anyway? Just curious as I am burning to make the switch from PC but I’m unsure whether to wait and see if the September refresh rumours are true or just go ahead and purchase.

Congrats! I got my d800 the other day and my jaw dropped when I saw the files on my screen. I have a 2011 MacBook Pro with no upgrades. I use an external drive to import photos too. I had no issues uploading raw files to Lightroom and didn’t really notice a speed lag in doing so. I did see a lag with load time on editing when zooming in and out but it wasn’t too bad. I haven’t tried photoshop yet. I will be upgrading to a SSD tho. The slight lag in Lightroom will be an issue when mass editing.

On Darren’s point, the display on websites won’t make a difference, but wait until you want to have your work on the side on a bus, now that’s when you’ll see the difference, I’ve found the D800 is like a medium format camera on a DSLR budget, I just love it!!

Good to see you’ve got the D800 Glyn, it’s a great camera and the upgrade on your mac will stop any slowing down working on those big files like my mac has! look forward to seeing the results! I hung onto my D3 for the rapid fire when I’m doing my 5-7 frames for HDR, only thing I found the D800 is a bit slow on, have a great day.

My son talked me into a Mac 27in pimped up to the max with SSHD, all I can say is AWESOME , no hanging around waiting for things to load.

Brian Great point! Also for those of us who have a normal computer will the extra file size mean a must upgrade if you buy these new extra high pixel cameras?

On another point as most people see these images on the web how much difference will be seen or detail wasted?

I’m quite interested to hear if the resolution jump will impact your retouching techniques or approaches. One thing I know is that working on 12MP files is quite different from 22MP files.
