Speed Retouch: Running Late

Hey Everyone,

Today I’ve a speed retouching video for you.

The picture is one from last year with model Stuart Warren and that I called “Running Late”

I’ve not written a tutorial for this image however last year I did a 2 hour Webinar with RetouchPRO where I made the picture from scratch by going through each and every step from making a new background from one picture, adding Stuart into the scene and more.

The webinar was recorded and is actually available for rental over on the RetouchPRO website and as well as the retouching theres also a Question an Answer session at the end where I explain the why and how of some of steps.

As always if you have any questions, comments or just want to spread the love, feel free to make use of the comments section below.

Have a good one and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow.
Enjoy,
Glyn

Matthias Butz - thanks for the video. I think you can learn much even from this speed retouching videos.

Darren Bushnall - Looks good but I already have access to the Kelby Training video with the dorky looking mechanic which is excellent, the sort of class that makes the subscription worthwhile!

50% Photography 50% Photoshop

Hey Everyone,

Hope you’re having a good week so far.

Last night I was over in St Neots, Cambridgeshire for my 50% Photography 50% Photoshop seminar/talk to the St Neots Camera Club; a great bunch of people and a very active camera club.

Speaking to camera clubs is something I absolutely love doing. I get a real kick from getting out and meeting with groups of people with varying levels of experience and skill and experience with both Photography and Photoshop.

It was interesting too last night that it seemed virtually all the group used Photoshop to some degree.

For the evening I started off by giving people an ideas as to how I started, things I’ve learned then onto mistakes I’ve made, stories and behind the scenes on some pictures, showing some retouching videos and then after the break going through a whole mix of Photoshop techniques, tips and tricks for retouching, workflow and special effects but keeping it so that each of the techniques were ones that could be used in the ‘real’ world…if that makes sense.

Huge thanks to the folks over at St Neots for such a warm welcome and for laughing at some of my jokes; dedication beyond the call of duty:)

  • Thanks for the visit Glyn, makes a refreshing change for us to see great PS work and less “traditional” stuff, enjoyed the evening ~ Peter Stokes
  • Thanks for a great evening. ~ Nigel Northwood

If you’re a member of a photographic club/organisation and would like to speak about talks/seminars please feel free to drop me a line to glyn@glyndewis.com; it would be great to come out and meet you all.

Right that’s all from me for today so have a good one and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow.

Enjoy,
Glyn

Joe Wilson - I wish I could afford to fly you out to Portland, Oregon for a talk. :)

LOOPER: Movie Poster Challenge

Hey Everyone,

How’s it going?

Thanks for dropping in.

So do you remember a short while back I mentioned about doing my own version of the Looper Movie Poster?

Well shortly after I’d posted the photos of Dave and myself that I was going to be using my friend Corey Barker of the N.A.P.P. and Kelby Training got in touch asking if he could have a play also; a bit of a poster challenge if you will.

Corey mentioned that the pictures would be great for a new project he’s currently working on so how could I possibly resist.

Anyway a few days later I get an email and literally burst out laughing seeing the result…

Corey’s in the middle of writing the next Photoshop Down and Dirty Tricks book and I’m more psyched than Psyched Jack McPsycher from Psychesville that he’s gonna be including this picture in the Hollywood Effects section.

Thanks Corey, I totally LOVE IT!!!

With Corey on the set of Photoshop User TV

In the mean time, if you haven’t already, check out Corey’s first Photoshop Down & Dirty Tricks book which became a best seller and literally emptied the shelves at Amazon faster than they could be filled!

Glyn - @Andrew / @MArk…Best I get practicing the look then :)

March 12, 2013 - 4:26 pm

Mark Imhof - Ahhhh very cool Glyn, but Andrew is right, your close. but you have to work on your expression to pull off Bruce but be carful that you don’t endup being Bruce all Mighty! ;)

March 12, 2013 - 9:31 am

Andrew Keane - Great effort Glyn. You’be got the bald head part spot on, just need to work on that New York cool glare :) I think it is a mix of disinterest and violence that is required to pull off Bruce Willis.

Instructor Dewis

Hey Everyone,

So how was your weekend?

Did you get up to much?

Starting the week off with a quick post as I didn’t get back from Dusseldorf, Germany until later last night and there’s much to get on with.

So why Dusseldorf?
Well I flew over at early o’clock to join my great friends Calvin Hollywood and Gabor Richter for the Moers, Calvinize event.

This time though…I was on the other side of the camera, getting a model’s eye view of things.

Calvin and I had been talking for a while about doing a picture together when Calvin suggested that seeing as we’re both Instructors, then why not do an Instructor Dewis picture. So a quick scout around the internet for some relevant clothing and voilà.

I’ll post the final picture here real soon but for now here’s a few Behind the Scenes picture to give you an idea:

In all seriousness I honestly think that being on the other side of the camera and being the focus of the shot is a worthwhile thing to do from time to time for every photographer.

Also modelling at the event was Jessica Gutzeit as the female warrior, Quasher was doing his Break Dancing and Artist, Dennis whom I met for the first time was there as Batman and what’s more he was wearing a totally authentic outfit that he’d made himself.

“If you’re name’s not down, you’re not coming in”

If you’re on Facebook definitely head on over and check out Dennis’ page [Link] where you can also see some other things he’s creating; the Iron Man suit looks incredible!

After Party
Following the event was After Party time when the inevitable ermmm Dance Off took place; this time with myself and Professional Dancer Quasher. Didn’t realise it at the time but what appeared to be the entire dance floor were looking up watching what we were doing, the lighting guys had put spotlights on us and the DJ announced it…such fun:)

All in all despite it being a whirlwind trip it was a fantastic couple of days with great friends.

Right, must dash so have a great Monday and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow.
Enjoy,
Glyn

David Kelly - Good to see you’re keeping up the dance moves practise for the after hours party at the forthcoming PSW ;-)

Consistency NOT Perfection

Hey Folks,

How’s it going?

Not long now until the weekend is with us.

Got much planned?

I’ll be heading out to Germany Saturday morning to join up with friends Calvin Hollywood and Gabor Richter for a workshop but I’ll let you know more about that next week.

In the mean time though I just wanted to share something quick with you that I saw last night when I was sorting through some old blog posts.

The Ultimate Recognition: 1st August 2007
2007 is when I first started writing a blog and that was for the sole purpose of putting myself under pressure to produce content like I mentioned in yesterday’s post. [Link]

I still remember exactly how I felt when I read it this post on Scott Kelby’s blog. You see at this point I’d only seen Scott Kelby in passing at Photoshop World, Las Vegas and that was from a distance and I remember thinking to myself “one day I want him to know my name”

Role Models
It doesn’t matter what age we are; if we have something in our lives that we love doing there will always be role models; those people in life we look up to and admire and for me Scott was, and still is, one of them. I tell you, waking up to read this on his blog on the 1st August 2007, for me was surreal. I was like a kid at Christmas…I didn’t think he even knew I existed back then; geez I didn’t have a business and didn’t even have a clue what I wanted to photograph. I was shooting anything and everything; if it stood still long enough I’d take a photo.

Having a role model/s is a good thing so long as that’s what they remain, and what I mean by that is NOT to compare yourself or your work to them. Role models by the very nature of what they are, are folks who are doing what we want to do, producing pictures like we want to produce and so on but if we compare ourselves then that will only serve to harm us. There’s the danger of thinking such stuff as “my work is nothing like that”, “why can’t I do that?”, “I’ll never be as good as that” etc when really we should be looking at what they’re doing and deep down in the pit of our stomachs feel that fire burning and motivating us to get out and create.

On the subject of ‘creating’ don’t expect perfection because you’ll spend a lot of time and effort looking for it. Back in my days as a competitive bodybuilder I was always told that ‘Consistency NOT Perfection is the key’

There will always be those people bigger, stronger and more gifted with their genetics and consequently it could be very easy to feel deflated in a gym. But, rather than think “I could never look like that” be consistent: train hard, eat plenty of the right stuff, get plenty of rest and do that often enough and for long enough, one day you’ll look in the mirror and you might just see one of those big guys you saw when you first walked into the gym. Consistency NOT Perfection is key!

Have a great weekend and I’ll see you back here in a few days.
Enjoy,
Glyn

J.R. Maddox - Consistency! This is so true.. I used to play golf professionally and this couldnt be more true. Nothing is ever PERFECT. We have to get that out of our heads. We have to strive be better and to do that we need to shoot as much as possible. Getting inspired by those that we admire. As a golfer I would practice hours a day… Some others would practice more than me… At first I always thought I had to be out there as long as they were. But for me I could not keep my FULL attention for more than 3-5 hours a day. If you are not 100% into what ever it is you are doing you are doing yourslef a BIG disservice. So bottom line, practice what you enjoy for as long as you can. keeping your focus on what it is you are trying to get better at.
Your work inspires me to practice more, and also makes me think I have to put my knowledge to the test at some point. We cant just learn we have to step out and shoot… You can never really know what you know til you get out and put it to the test.

Ok this is about the most I ever have written at one time… =)

Thanks Glyn!
