Fighters: Work in Progress (Quick Post)

Hey Folks,

Thanks for stopping by.

Today I have a quick post to share with you as a couple of magazine deadlines have moved forward and I need to get them finished up asap.

So today I thought I’d give you a sneak peek at one of the results from my personal project shoot last Sunday which is almost finished; all except for looking at it with fresh eyes some time later to see what else I can or need to do to it.

Here’s a screen grab from my Lightroom catalog:

I’ll be putting together a full walk through (Behind the Scenes) post of the shoot over the next few days but for now here’s a short video taken during my iPhone that gives you a brief look at what we were up to.

Right must dash, so whatever you’re up to have a great day and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow,

Enjoy,
Glyn

Video: Happy Christmas Everyone PLUS 2012 Review

Hey Folks,

Today I’ve a video for you.

Dave and I recorded it this past weekend when we got together for a full day of filming.

Anyway we thought whilst the cameras were all set up we’d take the opportunity to do a review of 2012 AND wish you all a Happy Christmas!

I’d originally  intended to write a post going over what’s happened in 2012 but I think the video captures what we wanted to say, so much better:)

Enjoy,
Glyn

Dominic - Guys, 2012 has been a weird year for me but thankfully on the photographic side of things it seems to be heading in the right direction and some of that is down to little, seemingly insignificant, moments of support. Moments that give you the encouragement to stick at it instead of giving up. Or even just little pieces of advice, tips, tricks, thoughts, ideas that can inspire anyone to do better, be better and continue to improve.

And so for that I thank you guys, hope you both have a cracking Christmas and a brilliant new year. Here’s hoping 2013 can be even better for all of us :-)

December 17, 2012 - 10:09 am

See you soon at High 5!

Photo Shoots and Photoshop Freaks

Hey Everyone,

Friday already…so do you have anything planned?

I’ll be with my Buddy & Assistant Dave Clayton tomorrow for a full day of filming and planning for 2013…can’t wait!

Then in the evening it’s the return of the Curry Club or rather #curryclub:)

For now though I’ve a few things to share with you…

Spriggan Mist
I mentioned earlier that I’ll be posting a B.T.S. (Behind the Scenes) look at what went into putting this picture together covering the lighting set up on location and then onto the editing in Photoshop.

I’ll be sure to have that on the blog early next week but for now I just wanted to say thanks for all the comments since I shared it across social media and my 500px and Fickr accounts. More than anything though I know members of the band have also seen the comments that have been posted and are, to use that good old English phrase “Chuffed to Bits”:)

So, keep an eye out for a couple of posts next week and also a video or two going through some of the Photoshop techniques.

Calvin’s Rockstar Tutorial on Photoshop Freaks
Talking of Photoshop techniques have you checked out my buddy Calvin Hollywood’s latest video training on his Photoshop Freaks website?

If not then seriously…click away and go take a look!

Knowing Calvin as I do I’m sure he won’t mind me saying that this is the BEST retouching class he’s done to date! Lots of great tips, tricks and techniques as he takes you through the making of his recent ROCKSTAR picture; covering the lighting and photography part first and then through the entire retouching workflow.

And as if that wasn’t good enough…don’t worry if you don’t speak German because he’s recorded this new class in English.

You’ll not just love it, you’ll learn loads!

Check it out here [Link]

Recent Female Fitness/Physique Shoot
Next week I’ll also be sharing some images and a look behind the scenes at a recent Female Fitness/Physique promotional shoot.

Again I’ll give you a look at the whole set up and shoot plus I’m hoping to get a couple of video tutorials recorded showing some of the retouching.

Personal Project Shoot
On Sunday I’ll be in the studio for one of my personal project shoots.

Taking time out to spend time shooting for ‘me’ is something I do on a regular basis.

This is where I’ll kind of give myself a photography assignment and will go through the whole process from deciding on a theme/concept, researching it, organising props and sourcing models and then doing the shoot and finally retouching the pictures. I treat it as if it was a commission from a magazine and the reason I do this is so that I’m regularly pushing myself and regularly working on new pictures for my own portfolio.

Time races by, in fact as I’m getting older it seems to be going quicker so I always make a point of putting time in the diary each and every month to shoot for myself.

The theme for this coming Sunday revolves around cage/street fighting and now I know what we’ll be working on, we’ve two male physique models coming along, props have been sorted, moodboards and sketches all done I can’t wait to get started.

Sure thing I’ll share some of the results with you too.

Right that’s all from me so I’ll let you crack on.

Whatever you’re going to be up to, have a great weekend and I’ll catch you back here in a few days.
Enjoy,
Glyn

Kelby Training: My Business Class is now LIVE

Hey Everyone,

Thanks for stopping by.

Hope all is well with you.

Ok so today I’m really excited to let you know that one of the classes I recorded for Kelby Training is now LIVE!

Here’s how this particular class is described over on kelbytraining.com

The Business Side of Glyn Dewis: Becoming a Successful Commercial Photographer
Spend an hour talking business with Glyn Dewis, a photographer, retoucher, and trainer based in the UK.

Glyn sits down with Kelby Training’s own Mia McCormick to discuss the business side of being a working photographer and retouch artist, where they delve into a variety of topics, such as developing a personal style, staying connected with clients, the importance of planning, and how to make the best of it when things go wrong.

Throughout the interview Glyn shares fantastic tips of the trade and some of the advice that has helped him the most.

This particular class went Live yesterday and already it’s so good to be able to read some of the feedback and get a feel for how the honesty in the class is being received:

Kevin Halliburton:
Listening to it right now Glyn. I’ve always felt a connection to your work, your style and your personality. Listening to the path you’ve followed feels very familiar too. I’m optimistic that I’m tracking your footsteps (from a ways back) as I’m trying to find my own path. This interview is one of the most personally applicable and helpful I’ve encountered. Thank you!

Mark Imhof:
OMG!!!! Glyn! I just watched the first 12min of your new Kelby Training Video and so many things are just getting so clear to me! I have also been thinking “how can I make money” and “how am I going to get more clients”. So I have been jumping from a wedding here to a portrait shoot there but I never stopped to think of what I enjoy doing. Till now it’s awesome!!!! So need to get back to the class.

Kev Boydell:
Great interview; think I’ve found some light at the end of the tunnel. Can’t wait for your training session to appear on Kelby Training.

Robert Qvist:
I just finished watching the class and I have to say it is one of the best I’ve seen for a while. Very relaxed, fun and very much good info! Good job Glyn! Hope to see more of this kind of class!

I really do hope you enjoy the class and I hope that some of what is talked and about rings true and helps with anything you might be experiencing or need help with; and if it does then of course it would be great to hear your thoughts.

As always you can email me at glyn@glyndewis.com if you have any questions or comments and I’ll be sure to get back to you.

In the mean time whatever you do, make sure you have fun!
Enjoy,
Glyn

December 16, 2012 - 6:44 am

michael hensley - Great interview Glen! I have also only been pursuing this art form for a few years, but thanks to the help of other photogs I have learned alot. Some of your words really help me feel better about where I am and the struggles I feel like I need to overcome to become better tomorrow than I was today.

P.S. Calvin Hollywood was the first guy that really made me go “wow, I want to shoot shots like that”. So you keep great company! Hope to bump into you for a pint one day!

December 13, 2012 - 4:20 pm

DaveT - Hi Glyn,

I have just watched the three interviews. Lots of interesting bits in there, and some that I can identify with myself.

I like the bit about sharing of information, I think your absolutely right in saying, that element is so important these days. Plus, anyone who has been involved in any form of training and development work is, I think, naturally inclined to have that sort of disposition as a person.

Wrapping up photography in a shroud of secrecy doesn’t benefit anyone.

Cheers
Dave

December 13, 2012 - 10:45 am

David Kelly - Good stuff – just watched the interview. A different take on the usual classes on Kelby training but a style of ‘class’ I’d actually like to see them do more of. I’d always posted feedback re: the interviews conducted with photographers on D-Town asking them for much longer discussions than the 2 minute slot on the show, so it’s now good to see something like this being done on the Kelby training site. Now I just want more of them please :-)

Very much looking forward seeing your photoshot / photoshop training session when it’s released.

See you soon :-)

December 13, 2012 - 10:28 am

Miguel Campos - Awesome!
And a great eye opener!
Good to know I am not the only one who got someone saying that after a certain job(Free) that would get more work….I’ve learn my lesson this year.

Keep up the good work ;)

December 13, 2012 - 9:34 am

Glyn - Thanks Darren ;)

December 13, 2012 - 8:52 am

Darren House - Heya Glyn

This is great and so you!

All the best and looking forward to the new classes coming on Kelby :)

Speak soon :)

Workshops & Work in Progress

Hey Folks,

How’s it going?

Just a couple of things today: a workshop update and a new & nearly finished picture.

Dynamic Duo Workshop: Sold Out!
Well the very first of the revamped 1 day workshops now called Dynamic Duo has Sold Out!

So why is it called Dynamic Duo?
This is a full on 1 day workshop where for the first part of the day we’re going through all the photography from lighting set up, camera settings and then shooting to capture images that we’ll then be working through and retouching in Photoshop during the second part of the day.

You can check out more details of what the workshop entails here [Link]

A new date is planned for April so if you’d like to be added to the waiting list feel free to contact me via email (glyn@glyndewis.com) or through the Contact Page [Link]

Spriggan Mist: Work in Progress
Ok so I just thought I’d give you a sneak peek at some work in progress.

The Before and After pictures below are from a promo shoot with a band called Spriggan Mist.

I’ll be posting a walk through next week going through the lighting set up and then the retouching but will also be recording a video tutorial showing a part of the retouch too. I’m thinking maybe showing how the sky was selected but if there’s anything else you’d like to see then feel free to leave a comment below.

Ok that’s all from me for today as I need to head out the door and into London; Christmas shopping and a sneaky visit to the Apple Store in Covent Garden:)

Whatever you’re up to, have a great day and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow,
Enjoy,
Glyn
