News: 500px, Photoshop Video Tutorial and Wolverine Work in Progress

Hey Everyone,

Friday already meaning the weekend is nearly upon us.

Hope you’ve had a good week.

Today I’ve a few things to share with you; some news, a new video tutorial and some work in progress.

Here goes…

Editor’s Choice on 500px
Really excited last night to have received an email telling me that one of my pictures had been selected as Editor’s Choice on 500px

500px is the premier site for Photographers from around the World to display their very best images.

You can check out my 500px portfolio here [Link]

Whilst you’re there be sure to have a good look around at some of the images from other photographers; there’s some incredible work out there!

N.A.P.P. Member’s Site
If you’re a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (N.A.P.P.) I’ve a new 20 minute video tutorial over on the members’ website.

In this video I show a technique for increasing the size of the backgrounds in your photographs when there’s not much of a space to work with, plus some special effects for adding shadows and lighting.

You can check out the video tutorial here [Link]

Hope you like it:)

I’ve been a member of the N.A.P.P. from the very first day I began using Photoshop; it’s such an incredible resource for learning and community. If you’re not already a member I’d highly recommend it and if you’re looking to join or have any questions be sure to get in touch with my Buddy Dave Clayton who runs the NAPP Member UK website and is the official N.A.P.P. UK Evangelist as well as being a bloomin awesome chap:)

Work in Progress: Wolverine
Finally, here’s a sneak peek at another ‘work in progress’ I have on the go that when finished will be my own version of The Wolverine:

I’m a HUGE fan of the X-Men and Super Hero style movies which come to think of it probably dates back to when I was a kid and used to climb on our garage roof with red tights on my head pretending to be Spiderman…but the least said about that the better:)

The Wolverine movie is due to hit the big screens in around a couple of months so for a personal project I thought it would be cool to do my own version of one of the posters:

I do this kind of thing as often as I can…deconstructing posters and figuring out ways to recreate some of the effects; it’s a great way to keep yourself fresh and to keep in the learning mode.

Right that’s all from me for today so whatever you’re getting up to, have a fabulous weekend and I’ll catch you back here in a few days if not before over on Facebook.

Enjoy,
Glyn

It’s Official: Photoshop ‘Blend If’ Sliders can perform Magic!!!

Hi Folks,

Today I wanted to share something I posted on my Facebook page a few days ago…

One of the pictures I’m working on at the moment is a three person composite which actually includes Dave and myself.

In the picture one of the things going on has Dave pouring coffee from a flask into a cup but because of being distracted he is overfilling it and the coffee is pouring out of the cup onto the floor.

Question was though…how to shoot it?

I guess we could have done it for real but the problem here was not wanting to make too much of a mess:)

Solution: Photograph Dave pouring the coffee into the cup and then take a second shot against a grey background of the coffee spilling over but done low to the floor over a container.

So now we have 2 shots: one of Dave pouring the coffee and the other of the overflowing cup; and this is where Photoshop can do it’s magic…

Using the Photoshop Blend If sliders no selection of the coffee is needed at all; within seconds and moving just one slider we’re able to remove the grey background leaving us with the coffee that can then be moved into place.

Lots more to do on this picture over the next few days and I’ll be sure to post it once it’s finished but I just thought I’d share this with you as I think sometimes we can get so wrapped up with thinking Refine Edge is the answer we’ve been looking for when there are so many gems within Photoshop we may not have considered.

Rollin McCarty over on Google+ said it perfectly when he saw me share this by commenting: “Seems like the more I learn about PS the more there is to learn. Thank you for the tip!”

On the subject of selections, I’ll be recording the FREE webinar once we get back from Photoshop World later this month and will post up details as to how you can access it shortly afterwards.

Right, have a great day whatever you’re up and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow,
Enjoy,
Glyn

Tree Surgeon: Behind the Scenes Video & New Picture

Hi Everyone,

How’s it going?

Today I’ve some Behind the Scenes footage and the final picture from the recent Tree Surgeon photo shoot I mentioned about on Monday.

Hope you like it:)

Ok as for the lighting, I used an Elinchrom Quadra…just the one battery pack but running 2 heads.

The Quadra is a great piece of kit…small, light (very light) and incredibly portable BUT not quite enough oompff to overpower the sun during the middle of the day; not that there was all that much of it around anyway mind you.

My thinking here was that I already knew I was going to be adding in a completely new backdrop during the retouching to make it appear as though Morgan was higher than he actually was, so all I was looking for was a blown out or featureless sky.

Why? Well to make the selecting and cutting out easier so all I was asking of the Quadra was to provide some highlights running down Morgan’s left hand side and to add some fill light to the front.

As for modifiers I used a medium softbox (without main diffusion panel) to the front and for the rear highlights, a beauty dish; not ideal as I would have preferred to have fitted a reflector but truth be told..it got left behind. Anyhow, the beauty dish worked out fine.

One question I’ve been asked since sharing the video across social media is “Why go high up when the Tree Surgeon was going to be cut out?”

A couple of reasons to be honest:

  1. We had to get off the ground to have clear sky behind which made the cut out easier as I mentioned earlier
  2. For realism. Now that might sound kind of strange but I think it wouldn’t have looked right if we’d taken the photos just off the ground; maybe something about Morgan’s expression might not have been the same, I don’t know but it’s like when I’m shooting 3/4 length shots or even head shots I think it’s important the subject still poses as if they were being photographed for full length shots for the pictures to look right…does that make sense?

So there’s a quick Behind the Scenes look at what went into this particular shoot but if you have any questions or comments, then as always feel free to make use of the comments section below or drop me an email to glyn@glyndewis.com

In the mean time though, you can see a larger, higher quality version of the final picture over on my 500px portfolio page here [Link]

Thanks for stopping by and I’ll catch you tomorrow,
Enjoy,
Glyn

Dan Glass - Nice Glyn! It would be cool to see the final advertisement as well. No other tree surgeon will have as nice a shot.

Kenedy - Loving it… Cool Glyn, great work.

A question, did you use the same workflow used on kellbytraining training? I bought it a week ago. I really liked it. I want to recreate this kind of style in my images. They are more than a simple photos, it’s like art.

Another one, wich technique to create this kind of image: http://500px.com/photo/21471535

I just love it.

Thankyou in advance for the info. Really looking for your help with those effects.

Work in Progress: Tree Surgeon Promotional Shoot

Hey Folks,

Hope you’re enjoying the extra long weekend.

Been up to much or making the most of the time to relax?

Me? Last Friday I was on location photographing a local Tree Surgeon (Morgan Rees) for his new promotional material.

I’ll be posting the final image later this week including a walk through and some of the planning and preparation but just to give you a sneak peek…

Mood boards
I’ve mentioned mood boards and how much of a big deal they are for helping with a photo shoot a few times before; I use them all the time be it for a personal project or a commission.

Creating a mood board and then discussing it with Morgan before the shoot meant that on the day we were ready from the off; we knew exactly where we were shooting, what tree we were going to be using, the direction I would be shooting from, the equipment we needed and so it goes on…

The sole purpose of this shoot was to produce just one final picture and that’s what I’ll be finishing off later today.

The idea which you can probably see from the mood board is to make it look as though Morgan is a lot higher than he really was on the day of the photo shoot; although if I’m honest it felt high enough to me:)

As for the backdrop ordinarily I shoot my own backgrounds but because of the time of year the tree’s are pretty much naked at the moment so it meant heading over to a stock site for some greenery; in this case iStockphoto.

I’ll post a walk through of this photo shoot in a little while but for now that’s all from me for today so enjoy the rest of the Easter break and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow,
Enjoy,
Glyn

David Kelly - As JT says it should be an interesting composite to see finalised – look forward to it.
Hope it wasn’t too woobly in the cherry picker with that wind!

Glyn - JT,
I use ‘Moodboard’ for iPhone/iPad…works really well :)

April 2, 2013 - 6:48 am

Glyn - DaveT…Let’s just say I’m glad we don’t ave trees that big :) lol

April 1, 2013 - 2:31 pm

DaveT - Nice one Glyn, mind you, I didn’t realise that we had trees as big as that, it must be because your further south ;-)

Looks a great composite in the making, really looking forward to seeing the ensuing walk-through/tutorial.

Jonathan Thompson - Excellent example of how composites can be amazing for commercial work. Promotional material can come in so many different looks. Very interested in how you finish this.

Great work Glyn…. Oh by the way, do you use a particular software or APP for mood boards? I’ve been using Pinterest for a couple of up coming projects, but I’d like more options. You’ve probably posted about this before, sorry if I’m going over old ground.

JT :)
