Photography’s hidden benefits!

A few weeks back I was asked if I would consider photographing the Wedding of two very special friends of a past client.
Now, not being a Wedding Photographer my initial thoughts were to decline but having heard a brief story about the couple concerned, I found myself wanting to know more; that’s when I met up with Derek & Dorothy.

Being a Photographer I get to meet and work with all sorts of interesting people…all with a story to tell,  but meeting up with Derek & Dorothy has stopped me dead in my tracks and moved me emotionally on more than one occasion; allow me to briefly explain why…

Derek & Dorothy met just under 3 years ago and have both been in long term married relationships before; Dorothy’s marriage ending in divorce after some 50 years and Derek’s wife Irene sadly passing away after some 55 years of wonderful, happy marriage. As well as being two of the sweetest people I have ever met, it’s sitting down and talking with them (something I could do for hours believe me) that has moved me so much. What I find ‘beautiful’ about their relationship is how they are so open and honest with each other and talk with fondness about their past.

Coming from a family where my parents got divorced when I was very young and seeing what holding on to ‘resentment’ can do to people, I initially found it a little uncomfortable how Derek spoke openly and with emotion about his wife Irene of 55 years, thinking how Dorothy may feel hearing it, but I needn’t have felt that way:

“We all have our past and if we hadn’t had the things happen in our lives that have,
then me and Derek may never have met and be together now”

Hearing Dorothy say that was so incredibly moving but more so was when Derek relayed to me what Dorothy had said to him some time before…

“If I could have met you all those years ago I would gladly swap places with Irene to have had the life with you that she had.”

I ask you…does it get any better than that? Generally I can deal with most things but hearing those words and thinking, really thinking what Dorothy means by saying that has nearly brought me to tears on several occasions and that I’m not afraid or embarrassed to admit.

I have a lot to thank Photography for but apart from the obvious, one ‘benefit’ I never considered at first was the people I would meet along the way. Ranking high in the people I feel privileged to have met are Derek & Dorothy; two people who to me, epitomise what relationships are all about: Dedication, Devotion and Love that knows no bounds.

Derek and Dorothy are to show to the world their devotion to each other and become husband and wife on the 26th June 2010 and I’m extremely honoured to be the one capturing this very special day, and rest assured I’ll be sharing some of the photographs here on the blog.

It would be wonderful if you could take a moment and leave a message for Derek and Dorothy here in the comments section, and should you wish to I’ll make sure that they get to see each and every one.

Thanks for looking in:)

Dave T - Hi Glyn,

Nice story.

For me photographing weddings is so much more rewarding when there is a connection between myself and the clients. Its clear from the images you have posted that Derek & Dorothy are relaxed with you and that you have established a good connection already – that bodes well for the wedding day.

Hope you all have a great day.

David Kelly - Hi ya Glyn – thanks for sharing this lovely story.
In my voluntary work as a bereavement counsellor I encounter people who’ve been through similar loses to Derek and I can only empathise with how he may have felt during that period. It’s reassuring to know that happiness can be found again after the end of such long relationships and that love strikes again at all ages of life.

Best wishes to Derek & Dorothy for the big day and their future as husband & wife! I know you’ll given them a beautiful set of images from the day to treasure.

June 18, 2010 - 5:51 pm

kelley - Glyn,
Thank you so much for posting this. What a beautiful story. I find that life and the storms we endure can make us tired and hard or we can surrender to it and become soft and loving and accepting, appreciating what it has taught us and what blessings it brings us. I am truly blessed by the example of Dorothy and Derek’s story of love.

Give them my well wishes and God bless them both with second chances. Having those in love are very special and extremely rare.

Glyn, enjoy the day of capturing their wedding, I can barely wait to see the photos!

PS thanks for the morning cry…

June 18, 2010 - 1:48 pm

Raleigh - Derek & Dorthy,

You are so lucky and an inspiration to me. I have been searching for that very same thing for the last 20 years and have yet to discover it. Many people don’t realize what a blessing it is to have someone love you as much as you do them. Best of luck in all you do.

June 18, 2010 - 8:39 am

Mike - What an amazing story mate.

The pictures are absolutely fantastic. Such a mix or shots too – well done!!!

Paul Pratt - Glyn, first of all the photo’s are wonderful. Now, Dorothy…and I’m talking directly to you, that is the strongest statement of love I have ever heard and you knocked me off my seat with that one!

All the best for the future to you both.

June 17, 2010 - 11:33 pm

Alex - Glyn we have not met but we will on the 26th!

You have managed to capture the essence of the wonderful relationship that my mum Dorothy and step dad to be Derek have together. My favorite photograph is the one on the left, they are together, close, laughing and enjoying what is – its a look they share often and one I look forward to seeing many times in the future!

Looking forward to meeting you

June 17, 2010 - 10:48 pm

Dan Davies - A very open and moving post Glyn, both for what it reveals of yourself and of your subjects. Bravo!

Getting to know the people I photograph has always been one of the joys of my profession – everyone has a story and there’s always value in hearing them.

Congratulations to the lovebirds – although only a slip of a lad (honest!) my second marriage is infinitely better than my first, but had my wife and I not each had the xx years of life & experience, then we’d never have met and even if we did, we’d not have taken a second glance at each other. We’re all the products of our experiences and it seems the experiences that Derek and Dorothy have been through have turned them into fabulous partners for each other. I wish them a long and happy marriage and can’t wait to see their wedding photos – Glyn, I know you’ll do them justice.

June 17, 2010 - 10:17 pm

Ed Harris - Wow what an incredibly moving story. Something we can all learn from I think. All the very best to Derek and Dorothy as they embark on their married love together. May they have many years of happiness together. And I KNOW they will have some very special pictures to look back on because they have the TOP MAN doing the job. Best wishes Ed xx

Keith Hammond - What a lovely story Glyn, thats love. Many many congratulations to you Derek & Dorothy. It’s easy to see how happy you are together in Glyn’s photos, a really nice set that i’m sure you both love.

The reason i love shooting weddings with a passion is because it is such a special day and i’m helping to make memories for people…….and it’s in the contract we get wedding cake :-)

I’m looking forward to seeing the wedding photos.
Best Wishes
