Hey Folks,

Hope all is well with you and thanks for stopping by 🙂

There’s lots going on here at the moment and lots to get completed before heading off to Italy this coming Friday and then Germany next week; geez I really must start collecting Air Miles.

Ok for today I’m kind of carrying on the theme from yesterday i.e. I’ve a book to tell you about…

Explore Lightroom 4 ~ A Roadmap for Photographers

The Author, my friend across the web Gene McCullagh very kindly sent me a copy of his new book a few weeks back now and I’ve been meaning to post about it since I read it through..cover to cover.

Anyone who knows me will agree that I’m a book-aholic. I guess on average I must buy a new Photography, Photoshop or self help book on a near weekly basis and as you’d expect I’ve got my favourites; books by authors who’s style makes learning fun and authors I’ve followed since day 1 of opening Photoshop and getting my first camera…a Nikon D200 by the way 🙂

Anyway I’m going to come straight out and say it…get this book!

Understand I don’t say this because Gene is a friend but rather because this is a darned good book. Clearly it’s taken quite some time to put together as this book is packed with useful information; not only does Gene explain how to use Lightroom 4 but throughout the book there’s boxouts with snippets of extra advice; perfect if you’re the kind of person that wants a closer look ‘under the hood’.

  • Chapter 1: What’s New In Lightroom 4?
  • Chapter 2: The Lightroom Way
  • Chapter 3: Getting Images into Lightroom
  • Chapter 4: Using the Side Door (Other Import Methods)
  • Chapter 5: Library-Part One
  • Chapter 6: Library-Part 2
  • Chapter 7: Organising Your Images-The “Where”
  • Chapter 8: Organising Your Images-The “What”
  • Chapter 9: Map
  • Chapter 10: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
  • Chapter 11: What’s Your Preference

To be honest up until fairly recently I was using Lightroom as nothing more than a way to tether my camera and somewhere to oranise my image files. Don’t get me wrong I know there’s so much more that can be done within Lightroom…it’s just that the kind of work I do and the workflow I’d adopted didn’t seem to call for it.

However that has now changed and Lightroom does play a more significant role in my workflow; the biggest change being how and where I store image files.

So would I recommend this book? You bet! It now sits proudly amongst my other favourites from folks such as Scott Kelby, Matt Kloskowski, Alan Hess, Corey Barker etc…see I told you I was a book-aholic but here’s why…

Amongst my ever growing collection of books inevitably there’s going to be the same topic covered more than once however it can take a different writing style to make the ‘penny drop’…does that make sense?

Been looking for something that explains it in a ‘penny drop’ way. Honest enough to say other than tethering, I’m still not getting it. Good job Sir…

Will, so with you there mate but over the past couple of months I’ve started using it a heck of a lot more. Not really for the editing side but rather really taking advantage of getting well and truly organised with my files 🙂
