Book Review: Photoshop Down & Dirty Tricks by Corey Barker

From day 1 when I first started using Photoshop I’ve been a book-aholic desperate to keep learning more and more about what’s possible with this incredible piece of software.

One of the very first books I bought was Down & Dirty Tricks by Scott Kelby which was packed full of tips, tricks and effects but unlike most other books it was presented in a way that you could learn the how and why as opposed to just ‘Photoshop by numbers’ if you know what I mean; vital if you’re wanting to learn Photoshop and then take the effects and apply them to your own images.

An updated version of the Down & Dirty Tricks series hasn’t hit the shelves for a while…well, until now that is and geez is it back with a vengeance or what?!?

This latest book with the title of Photoshop Down & Dirty Tricks for Designers is the very first book written by Corey Barker of the N.A.P.P. and Kelby Training and to give you an idea of exactly how darned good it is…it sold out within just 4 days of being released!!!

Now, one thing that is really important to note is about the title…”Down & Dirty Tricks for Designers” because you see this book is for everyone who uses Photoshop…Designers, Photographers, Digital Artists…you name it…there’s something in it for everyone; it most definitely is not just for Designers:

  • Chapter 1: Brush Effects
  • Chapter 2: Type Effects
  • Chapter 3: Design Effects
  • Chapter 4: Commercial Effects
  • Chapter 5: Photo Effects
  • Chapter 6: Hollywood Effects
  • Chapter 7: 3D Design Effects
Another great thing about the way it’s written is that Corey will take you through a technique by talking through the whole process step by step but then at the end will show the same effect used in a slightly different way on a completely different image; great for giving the reader ideas how they too could adapt it to their own work which in turn helps with the learning and understanding process…

Corey has done an absolutely incredible job with this book! It’s pages are literally packed with techniques and special effects; the kind you’ll see used in movie posters to product advertising campaigns. Every single step that goes into achieving the exact same look is covered in such a way that the reader can not only replicate the effect but will actually understand the how and the why each step is carried out so they too can then go on and add their own slant to it. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I’ve learned from reading it the first time through and that’s already helping me with my own compositing work…exciting times!

Summary
2011 has been one heck of a year for the quality of Photoshop and Photography books that have been produced and this latest edition by Corey Barker ranks as one of the best!

Down & Dirty Tricks for Designers is a book for anyone who uses Photoshop. From Beginner to Advanced if you use Photoshop and you want to take your skill to the next level..GET THIS BOOK!!! .. it’s that simple!

You’ll learn so much and so quickly and on top of that the example images throughout the book which you see being made from scratch will motivate and inspire the heck out of you…Guaranteed!

Having read through the book in one sitting, the only negative I can come up with is the fact that I was away from computer at the time and couldn’t start trying out the techniques straight away 🙂
