My Gear List

Here’s a current 2019 list of all the kit I use for my Photography, Retouching, Video and Podcasting.

Being completely transparent, out of all the kit listed here I am linked in with Westcott as one of their Top Pros and a BenQ Ambassador, but apart from that there’s no other company listed that I’m tied in with or have any kind of contract; I basically use it because it’s fit for purpose and does exactly what I want it to do! I also used both Westcott and BenQ kit before I became associated with them in any way.

Oh and just so you know the links below will take you (mainly) to Westcott and Amazon and this means you pay the same price you always would have done but because they’re Affiliate links, they also give me a commission ranging anywhere from 3% – 8%

Thanks for the support.

Sony Alpha A7 RII Mirrorless Camera:
Genuinely love this camera. Detail, sharpness and dynamic range are insane!
Sony Alpha A6500:
Brilliant! Use this one a lot for capturing video but it makes a great addition to my Anytime, Anywhere Portrait Kit. Also great as a webcam when used with the Elgato Cam Link (below)

Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM (G Master) Lens:
My favourite lens by a long way! It’s quite bulky and weighty but oh my god is it sharp!
Sony SEL55F18Z.AE 55mm f/1.8 ZA Lens
Sony Sonnar T* FE 35mm f/2.8 ZA Lens

Westcott Light Modifiers

I use both Studio Lighting and Speedlights depending on whether I’m in the studio or on location but for both I use the Westcott Rapid Box Switch range of modifiers which allow me to use the same modifiers on either light source instead of having to buy different modifiers to fit on each.

  • NOTE: UK folks, check out Carmarthen Cameras LINK for the Westcott product line

Westcott Rapid Box Switch Beauty Dish
Love this! Solid construction, great size and collapses down quickly and easily making it great for use with my Anytime, Anywhere Portrait Kit (Below)
Westcott Rapid Box Switch Octa (Medium) 36″
Westcott Rapid Box Switch Octa (Large) 48″
(I use this one a lot for my Veterans Portraits and with a Speedlite)

Tripod and Head

Manfrotto MT055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod:
Love it! Solid, light and never lets me down. Despite abuse it remains as good today as when I got it.
Manfrotto MHXPRO-BHQ2 XPRO Ball Head with 200PL Quick-Release System:
Manfrotto  Q2 L Bracket:
This is a must because it means you don’t have to alter the height of your tripod every time you swap between shooting landscape and portrait orientation.

Video & Audio

Sony Alpha A6500:
Brilliant! Use this one a lot for capturing for both video footage and as a webcam when combined with the Cam Link (below). Superb Focus Tracking means footage is pin sharp every time.
Feelworld F6 Field Monitor 5.7″ 4K:
Great ‘on camera’ screen for use when filming so you get to see footage BIG.
Audio Technica AT2020 USB Microphone:
The quality of sound this records is SUPERB! Replaced a mixer and much more expensive microphone with this and now have far superior results!
Audio Technica Artist Elite ATM510 Cardioid Dynamic Handheld Microphone:
We’ve got 4 of these in total and use them for recording podcast episodes on location. Again, superb sound quality! Very Happy!
RODE PSA1 Studio Boom Arm
Shure Lenshopper VP83 Shotgun Microphone:
A superb ‘on camera’ microphone. Great for indoor and outdoors when close. Normally I use this and sync the audio with the Zoom H1
Zoom H6 Handy Recorder with Interchangeable Microphone System:
This thing is fantastic! Incredibly easy to use and superb sound! Can plug 4 XLR microphones into it too!
Elgato Systems Cam Link:
Turns your camera into a webcam. Just plug and play. No software needed. Brilliant!
DJI Osmo Mobile:
Makes use of my now retired iPhone and great for smooth B-Roll footage
DJI Mavic Pro Fly More Combo:
Great for that extra special B-Roll. Legs collapse down so it packs into my camera bag with no issues.
Manfrotto MVMXPRO500US XPRO Aluminum Video Monopod:
I use this in my office to record video to camera. Usual well built bit of kit from Manfrotto. Takes up very little space.

Computer Stuff

Dell XPS 8930 (64Gb RAM) (My Desktop Computer)
Dell XPS 15 (9560) (My Laptop)
BenQ SW320:
My main monitor. Nice big screen and comes with screen shade. Also has SD card slot which is very handy!
BenQ SW2700:
I use this one as a dual monitor to give me more space when editing. Also use it when doing Live Broadcasts so I can see control panel on one screen and workspace on the other.
X-Rite i1 Display Pro:
Easy to use. Does what it says on the tin. Colour Calibrating your monitor is a MUST and I use this with the BenQ Palette Master Software
Wacom Intuos Pro (Small) Graphics Tablet
Logitech K800 Wireless Illuminated Keyboard:
I edit a lot in low light so this is invaluable otherwise I ended up pressing the wrong keys over and over again
Synology Diskstation DS416 4-Bay NAS Server
WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive – 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch
WD 1 TB Elements Portable Hard Drive (Mobile Backup)
Phase One Capture One Pro 11 for Sony:
I prefer to use this software for tethering; solid, stable, fast and NEVER lets me down.
Elgato Stream Deck:
This thing is AMAZING! Takes the stress out of LIVE Streaming with the press of a button. LOVE IT!

It’s best to contact your local supplier for what you need; I’m not using Elinchrom so much these days.

  3. Thomas Logan

Hey, Glyn! What GPU do you have in your desktop computer?

  4. Eileen

do you find the wacom small tablet tough to navigate? (from what I read online it says to stay away from the small but the price is more than 1/2 off the medium…. wondering your thoughts on this?)

    • Glyn

The small is perfect…it’s all I ever use both in main studio work and when travelling. With prolonged use I use to find anything bigger would give me arm ache having to lift up to reach one end and then other; with the small it’s a simple rotation of the wrist and I can cover the entire screen which makes working with it very comfortable indeed.

      Hope this helps

Hi Glyn. First off I´m a big fan of your podcast it´s a great source of inspiration for me on many levels. Your last episode on printing was also great. Printing is something I dream to master but I frankly never got any luck and I have had much frustration on the subject. For what could understand you have eliminated luck in your process with a spectrometer from x-rite. I did not get what the specific product was – looking online I found “i1Studio” from X-rite. Is this the tool you are using or is it a different product.

I am a big fan of your work and I love chemistry you and Dave both display in the podcast. It shows how much you both love what you´re doing. Keep up the good work.

    Have a great summer, Jesper
