Ok so today I’m going slightly off topic…well quite a bit off topic actually so please stick with me…
I want to use this post to mention something that we experienced during our holiday on Skiathos, Greece last week.
Now anyone who knows me would be aware that I’m well and truly an animal lover; I mean my Buddy Morris is one of my biggest critics 🙂
Anyway whilst away we couldn’t resist visiting the Skiathos Dog Shelter; the home for abandoned, homeless, ill / injured dogs on the island which is actually a shelter set up and run by an English couple who first visited the island in the late 1980’s.
If you visit the shelter you can take the dogs out of the enclosures and give them some exercise by taking them for a walk in the local woodland area and this we did on a couple of occasions. It just felt so incredibly heart warming to get the opportunity to take some of the dogs out and give them some fuss as a large majority of those there certainly hadn’t experienced it before; well before arriving at the shelter anyway.
One of the things I couldn’t help smiling at was seeing my wife Anne walking the dogs; first of all a Golden Retriever called Boson and then a German Shepherd Puppy called Sandy, because when we first met, and up until the past few years, Anne was incredibly wary of dogs to say the least; now though it’s a completely different story…
So why am I telling you this?
Well to be honest I felt like I needed to. I felt like I needed to make you aware of some incredible people who through sheer hard work, dedication and love are making a difference.
I totally 100% understand why they do what they do but I can’t even begin to imagine how challenging it must have been to first of all set something up like the Dog Shelter not coming from Greece let alone Skiathos, but also how challenging it must be to keep it running without electricity or running water…especially when you see that the location of the shelter is in a remote area of the island and miles from residential areas…INCREDIBLE!
The Dog Shelter is entirely funded by donations that come in from tourists who visit the island during the holiday-ing 5 months of the year but that just about manages to keep it’s head above water, so…
I want to let you know that you can help and hey I make no apology for asking for something here because well, this is my site and I can write what I like…right? 🙂
So, if you’d like to and are able to help in any way towards the care for these wonderfully loving dogs who haven’t had the best introduction to what life could be like for them, here’s where you can do exactly that…
Visit the official Skiathos Dog Shelter site here [Link] and click on the How can I help? tab; oh and the help isn’t just about sending money.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read through this post and for allowing me to take the opportunity to go off topic and let you know about something I felt I needed to.
Have a great Thursday and I’ll catch you back here tomorrow.
