Thought I’d add a quick post to show you a new picture that I put together last week for a chapter in my new book Photograph Like a Thief due out in early 2017. Further down I’ve also included some Behind the Scenes pictures so you can see the lighting and set up.
The idea for doing this picture was originally inspired by a Photographer friend of mine over in Norway by the name of Glenn Meling whom I’d seen was creating some truly incredible images using model action figures such as the Joker from Batman and one of my favourites being his Popeye picture.
The first action figure I purchased, I mean invested in, was the Arnold Schwarzenegger Terminator Genisys Guardian but rather than create an action scene my idea was to see if I could make a realistic portrait and that was where I intended to stop.
However Glenn did pre warn me that one action figure inevitably leads to another and well…
In the picture below you can see the set up from the photo shoot that I did in my office. For the background I cut off a piece of the grey seamless paper and gaffer taped it to my Benq Monitor and for the lighting I used two Phottix Mitros+ Flashes and Rogue Flashbender 2 XL Pro’s
Here’s a couple more pictures giving you a look at the lighting and set up with one from above looking down so you can see exactly how the lights were positioned. You can also see that I was shooting tethered into my MacBook Pro using Canon EOS Tethering Software and my camera was on a tripod.
The idea behind this picture and chapter in the book that it’s in was to reverse engineer the original movie poster and then create something similar. In the book I go into detail why I think the original picture was at least a 3 light set up (possibly 4) by discussing the highlights and shadows, how they fall and what kind of shadows they are (hard or soft).
Here’s the original poster that I saw whilst browsing the impawards.com website:
So just a quick post to give you a little look at another new picture that’s in my new book which incidentally I’ve now finished writing and all the content is with the publishers, Rocky Nook ahead of the deadline too 🙂
