Photograph Like a Thief: The Cover Design

Hi Folks

Been looking through some folders on my computer recently and came across these that come from when I’d just had a meeting over lunch with my Publishers (Rocky Nook) and we got chatting about the cover design for my new book, Photograph Like a Thief.

Initially I’d thought that the cover would be like most photography books with a photograph and text however Scott Cowlin had ideas for something very different.

I’m really proud of the content in the new book and honestly don’t think there’s anything out there like it covering the principle of photograph like a thief and because of this Scott felt that the cover too should be different. He mentioned the name Saul Bass and suggested both Dave (my Buddy and Designer Dave Clayton) should take a look and see if we could come up with some ideas and following the concept of the book maybe design like a thief and use the inspiration from his work to create something. I’d never heard of Saul Bass however Dave had so for the next couple of days we both drew some rough ideas.

Here’s what we came up with and without even mentioning to each other what we were thinking of…

Spooky how similar our ideas were huh?

So following on from the ideas, Dave then went on to not only design the layout in Adobe InDesign but also draw from scratch a brand new font that could be used on the cover and interior of the book!

Now that the book is all written and we’re just going through edits from the publishers before it goes to layout, Dave has also designed the back cover. I’ve also seen a sample of the interior layout design and to say I’m excited would be the understatement of 2016 because Dave’s cover design follows throughout making the book so incredibly easy to follow and great on the eye rather than just text and pictures.

Can’t thank Dave enough for doing such a great job and what’s more when the design sample was sent to the Publishers (Rocky Nook) it was agreed on the spot which we were told has never happened before!

Anyway thought I’d give you a look into how the design came about and I’ll also start adding some more posts giving you a look at how I came up with the idea for the book, the content and so on…
