Snapseed: Not just another editing App for the iPad!!!

Ok so if I’m honest when I first heard of Snapseed my initial reaction was “Not another editing App for the iPad!“… I mean how many more do we need and thinking about it, what’s the point because I’m never going to actually take them serious enough to do any ‘proper’ editing; or at least that’s what I used to think…

Snapseed is made by Nik Software…the makers of Photoshop Plug ins such as Silver Efex Pro 2 [Link] and Color Efex Pro [Link] so when it comes to editing these guys definitely know a thing or two, and it shows…

Everything about the interface, the usability and most importantly the results it can produce just work! So much so that since installing the App and having been using it for just over a week I’ve removed most if not all of the other editing Apps that I used to use.

The interface is incredibly user friendly giving ready access to the multitude of adjustments and filters that are available such as Drama, Grunge, Centre Focus, Selective Adjustment, Auto Correct and so on and what’s more Snapseed makes use of finger gestures to choose and applying a filter, or adjustment with ease…

Nik Software have even the included the ability to selectively edit a specific area of an image by using something very similar to their Viveza technology [Link], which incidentally works a treat…

Snapseed is addictive! I’ve edited quite a few photos using it over the past week and having exported and opened them in Photoshop to take a closer look, I’ve been really impressed with the quality of the results.

Previous experience using other editing Apps has been that they look great whilst still in the iOS device, but then when looked at a little closer the editing applied is actually quite crude; but this is definitely not the case with Snapseed! In fact on more than one occasion I’ve only then opened the image in Photoshop to remove an unwanted item, a little tidying up and some sharpening.

The really interesting thing is that although I’m not going to be using my iPad and Snapseed to edit client images anytime soon, it’s certainly food for thought about the way things are going. 5 years ago I never would have dreamed I’d have in my hands a phone that not only makes and receives calls, but is also a Sat Nav, a web browser, a language translator, a personal music system, a video player and so on…all which at one point seemed implausible, so is it so far fetched to think that one day we will be editing client images on our iPads?

You see Snapseed by Nik Software is good…really good, and because of this it’s got me thinking that maybe in the future, editing directly on the iPad isn’t such a daft idea.

So what do you think? Far fetched or not? I’d love to ‘hear’ your thoughts on this so as always please feel free to make use of the comments section below.
Enjoy 🙂

Glyn – Thanks for the kind words today about Snapseed! It’s great to hear that you’re enjoying it quite a lot and it was refreshing to see some amazing sample images loaded into Snapseed – well done all around!

One of our goals was to introduce high quality yet ultra easy-to-use photo editing to people who would never consider themselves “pro” photographers or even hobbyists. Just folks with cameras who like pictures. Do you think we’ve hit the mark?

    Cheers, Kevin (from Nik)

      Hi Kevin.
Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment; very good of you.

Congratulations to you and your team for creating such a fantastic App. Like I said in the blog post, as a pro photographer I doubt I ever would have considered using an iPad App to edit my images but with Snapseed you’ve raised the bar and definitely got me a countless other pros thinking. Sure at the moment I wouldn’t leave it purely to App editing but this really does excite me about the future.

As for your initial intentions…you’ve nailed it! Without doubt with this App you have now given folks who either don’t have or simply don’t ‘get’ photoshop or editing in general, to now do exactly that and bring out the best in their images.

      Seriously impressive application; congratulations!!!

      Best wishes to you,
      Glyn
