We’ve lost another of the Greatest Generation

Saddened to hear this morning that we’ve lost another of the Greatest Generation … WW2 Veteran Geoffrey Pulzer aged 97 (formerly 29th Armoured Brigade, 11th Armoured Division).
Geoffrey was so incredibly gracious when I took his portrait. We spoken on the phone last year when he received his mounted and boxed portrait parcel (which I ordinarily would have delivered but was unable due to the pandemic), and he was so very keen for me to visit and record his memoires.
Sad that we never got to grab that cuppa but I stand by it being the right decision not to record anything the first time we met. It didn’t seem appropriate. Sometimes it just doesn’t.
Meeting and getting to know our veterans has changed me as a photographer. It’s taught me so much. Not just the importance of a photograph but more than anything the importance of connecting and the importance of listening.
Without it we have Pixels, but with it we have a Portrait.
